Herrington Country Park is a country park and open public space in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. Located adjacent to Penshaw Monument, the park is on the site of a former colliery. The park has developed into a significant home for wildlife, hosting up to 100 species of bird.

It is also home to my own Dad’s memory tree, his choice of location. My grandfather also requested his ashes be scattered from Penshaw Monument. So, this month’s location is very close to my heart.
The Lambton Worm
John Lambton, the heir to a wealthy County Durham Estate, catches a strange worm-like creature while fishing in the River Wear as a child when he should have been at church.
Believing it to be devilish in nature, he cast it down a well and thinks know more of it. He grows up to be a knight and goes off to fight in crusades overseas.
In the intervening years, the worm grows into a huge beast, terrorising Wearside and curling itself menacingly around Penshaw Hill.
Returning from battles abroad after many years, John Lambton recognises his responsibility for unleashing the worm. He fights and kills it after advice from a local witch.
However, he is unable to follow through on the witch’s warning that his family will be cursed if he does not kill the first living thing he sees after he kills the beast. The story goes that several of John Lambton’s descendants came to grizzly ends.

You see stories, memories and keepsakes are important. Life is short. Our humanity is what makes us beautiful. The light will never look or be seen the same again and neither will we. We will never have this moment again.
