“Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever… It remembers little things long after you have forgotten everything”

Aaron Siskind

Spring Walks

My outdoor Spring family sessions usually involve a simple nature walk. This helps you and your children get comfortable with me and my camera. Once we are at ease with one another; we can create natural portraits of you and your children having fun. Capturing you as you know each other best.

Choosing your own location helps this transition. You can provide input and insight, making your session and the resulting images more personal and sentimental to you. And I get to discover beautiful locations I may not have come across without incredible clients and their marvellous suggestions.

Woodlands are amazing in Spring and Summer. Shelter from the harsh mid-day sun and so full of life and colour. Or take an early morning or afternoon stroll in those wide open spaces.

Follow my blogs to find out my favourite locations each month, plus if you sign up to my mailing list you get exclusive offers and discounts on these special locations.

How To Have a Successful Outdoor Shoot

The key is to have fun and be silly if you want to.

Think about hobbies or activities you enjoy as a family. If you enjoy paddle boarding, then let’s go to your favourite lake. If you love tree-climbing, then let’s climb a tree. We can take a picnic or football, whatever works for you.

Make the most of the space. You don’t want your portraits confined to one background. Public parks with open space, woodland and play areas make a great choice.

Nobody is perfect. Don’t worry what people think of you, these memories are for your loved ones to remember you by, your character, your love and energy. I hate my photograph taken, no judgement here, but its important to remember the photographs of you aren’t for you. And if there is something you really are embarrassed about, let your photographer know ahead of time and it won’t be captured on camera. But if you’re feeling brave, capture all the little details. The imperfections are where the story hides.

What to Wear

It’s important to dress appropriately, for the location and the weather. Your clothing will create style and individuality to your stories and memories.

April can still see a lot of wet and changeable weather, be daring with your outdoor family fun, sometimes the most beautiful light is in those moments between the rain, be brave and jump in those muddy puddles. May and June brings warmer weather so make sure to protect against the sun and any allergies, Vaseline is a great way to stop the pollen getting up your nose.

If we have decided on woodland, appropriate footwear is a must.

When to Book

Spring and Summer brings the best of the weather, more available light, more locations to choose from. The earth has come to life, lets get out and enjoy it. The great thing about this time of year is there is no best time to book, choose a date that means something to you as a family, or if thinking about gifts for loved ones, plan in advance and get those memories booked in about a month or two before to avoid any last minute stress.

Weather

As I’m sure you’re aware, any time of year in the UK can mean unpredictable weather. I often check and double check several weather apps and websites before we set off.

The decision to cancel due to the weather is not taken lightly. In most cases, unless a torrential downpour, I am often willing to still attempt it. After all its about creating something unique and fun.

It’s also good to be prepared for rainy days. Umbrellas, towels, blankets, maybe even a change of clothes just in case. I suggest this whatever the weather and location, just in case we get adventurous and carried away with the fun.

The final decision is ultimately yours. But I wouldn’t dismiss a rainy day too soon. It could be a great distraction, especially for younger children. Who doesn’t love jumping in puddles and dancing in the rain? Fun can be infectious if you let your inner child play.

If you really can’t abide the wet, then I suggest to hold off until May or June to be more likely to get a warm and dry day.

I would love to come along on a family walk with you and your loves.

Give the Gift of Memories

And Now it’s Spring

The grass is green across the hill,

But yellow blooms the daffodil.

It’s sunshine on a little stalk,

A friendly flower, I bet they talk …

Of little kids, too long inside

They burst outdoors to play and hide,

Tracking mud and bringing bugs,

Look, there’s footprints on the rug!

Tiny whirlwind, these little tykes,

They skin their knees while riding bikes,

They rip and roar, they’re running wild!

What fun it is to be a child.

It grows warmer every day.

Shoo the children out to play!

Pick the flowers, play in mud.

Too much rain, here comes a flood!

My snowy, winter days are gone.

I mourn them, but I hear a song

Of birds in trees; wind chimes ring.

I guess it might as well be Spring!

Why Photography is Important

I’ve read that children feel safe, welcome, seen and loved if there are images of themselves in the family home.

I love this idea and think this is something every family needs to know.

You see stories, memories and keepsakes are important. Life is short. Our humanity is what makes us beautiful.

The light will never look or be seen the same again and neither will we.

We will never have this moment again.

So, let’s capture it!
